Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the first sitting Japanese Prime Minister to venture beyond San Francisco to the tech centers of the South Bay.

The festival is one of the longest-running traditions in the city and honors deceased ancestors. But as Obon is celebrated locally,Setup on Friday was well underway for the festival where ancestors’ spirits return to the world of the living and Japanese people welcome their arrival."We are deeply grieved with the death of prime minister Abe," said Rev. Gerald Sakamoto of San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin.

"Prime minister Abe was a courageous and energetic man," said Dr. Dan Okimoto of the Silicon Valley Japan Platform, which helped to organize Abe’s visit here."So the message that it sent to Japan, which was covered by all the mass media, was that Silicon Valley is the key to Japan’s future," Okimoto said.

Okimoto said he doesn't have any doubt that Prime Minister Abe’s interest in Silicon Valley has helped the tech relationships on both sides of the Pacific.
