The retirement leaves a hole in Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s frontbench and uncertainty about who would serve as shadow foreign minister, Birmingham’s current portfolio, under a Coalition government.“Can I say thank you very much to Simon Birmingham, who has just announced his retirement as our leader the opposition in the Senate,” Dutton said.
Birmingham is widely respected on both sides of politics and will deliver a valedictory speech at 4pm. He entered the ranks of the shadow outer ministry, promoted by then-opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull just two years later.
