A single mother with a large family has been living in Cairns hotel rooms for over two years, facing challenges due to the high cost of private rentals and limited availability of social housing. The situation highlights the need for bigger, affordable homes for families in similar situations.
The first round of grants from the Housing Australia Future Fund were announced in September. For more than two years the single mother has been staying in Cairns hotel rooms with her big family, including two sets of twins."Having a big family in a small space, it’s a lot of noise."I’m always worried about noise, I’m always worried about complaints, I’m always worried about rubbish and things like that, because we do have a big family.
"The Housing Australia Future Fund is encouraging substantive amounts of private sector investment into social and affordable housing, which means less taxpayer funds for more homes," said federal Housing Minister Clare O'Neil. BlueCHP applied to the HAFF to build 3,800 homes from far north Queensland to South Australia but only 10 per cent of their applications were successful.
Mr Northcote said in future rounds, a clear assessment criteria is crucial to help applicants submit more targeted projects. "These homes have different designs ... and providers would like to tailor their response to what they know the government would like to deliver." The minister said Housing Australia was working to improve the experience for applicants to the scheme.
