But, a few weeks ago, recent research confirmed that it is indeed worse for single people who are financially penalised for not being part of a couple. Research conducted by financial services providerfound that single people spend, on average, about £1,851 on monthly household bills, but if you’re one half of a couple, this works out to only £991 each.
has confirmed that single parent families have much lower levels of wealth than those in couples. This is true in many rich countries. For example, in France, Italy and Spain, single parent households were found to have just over half the average wealth of dual parent households, but the picture was far bleaker in the UK where they had just 37 per cent.
But, as the years go by, creating a safe environment to look after the next generation is becoming harder and harder for couples, let alone single people, to do because the cost of living is just so damn high. So, instead of romanticising partnership for its own sake on Valentine’s Day, of putting relationships on a pedestal and pushing the idea that love conquers all, we should be talking about what people really need if they are in a romantic relationship and particularly if they are not: decent homes they can afford to live in and childcare that won’t break the bank. These are the basic building blocks of life.
