You’re single, you’re in a busy bar and you like the look of someone across the room. You want to go up to them and start flirting, but you don’t want to waste your time with someone who is already in a relationship. No problem! You look at their hand and check for the Pear Ring on their finger, the ultimate signal that they’re single and ready to mingle. As you approach, they look at your hand, and you, too, are wearing the Pear Ring. Romantic bliss awaits.
The website claims you will get a membership number, get invited to something called “PearFest” and get exclusive, free events in your city. The “experiment”, it says, is happening right now in the UK, USA, Germany, Canada and Australia., the idea of identifying a singleton in the wild is appealing to Katie, 22, from London. She’s seen lots of adverts for the Pear Ring and heard about it from her friends, who have also had it marketed to them on Instagram.
Tara, a 23-year-old student in the East Midlands says; “I bought one, because if I see anyone else wearing one I will be really excited, and more confident about approaching them. It’s also not bulky or obnoxious-looking. I don’t have really high expectations because I’ve not seen anyone wearing one in my nearest city, Birmingham, but I think it could be worth it.”
