Plans for new Fido machines and bins welcomed
In August elected members at a Belfast City Council committee meeting voted to raise maximum fines for dog owners from £80 to £200, and the reduced rate from £80 to £100. Sinn Féin were the only party to oppose the change at that meeting, and successfully stalled the decision, pending a report coming from council officers.
Sinn Féin Councillor Micheal Donnelly said: “We won’t be supporting the increase. The work done to date is very positive - the fact there are four Fido machines across the city is very proactive, and well done to the team for making that happen. DUP Councillor Tracy Kelly said: “I don’t think I have ever seen a Fido machine in the south, so I absolutely welcome there are four new machines coming.” She asked for priority for cleansing in the south of the city.
SDLP Councillor Séamas de Faoite said: “If we increase fines now that sends a very strong message to people.” It adds: “The City Services team are considering the best way to review signage and consider a budget and program of work for this. Whilst some existing signs could be replaced within the existing enforcement and dog warden service budget on a rolling program, we recognize that there is a need to explore options to future proof any new signs and consider the best messaging.
