The Prime Minister said he had not read the expletive-laden text messages Mr Williamson sent to Wendy Morton until last night.

In one message he says: It’s very clear how you are going to treat a number of us which is very stupid and you are showing f*** all interest in pulling things together.”

In another, he says: “Well let’s see how many more times you f*** us all over. There is a price for everything.” Throughout the exchange, Ms Morton repeatedly insists the claims aren’t true, and that there were only limited ticket numbers for the funeral.he “regretted” getting frustrated in the messages about the way himself and his colleagues were being treated.

“I am happy to speak with Wendy and I hope to work positively with her in the future as I have in the past.” On Sunday Oliver Dowden, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, defended Sir Gavin’s conduct, saying the messages were sent in the “heat of the moment”. He said he thought it was right Sir Gavin “should be a part” of Mr Sunak’s team.
