An elderly woman has been found dead inside a flooded home in Lismore, in northern NSW, where waters slowly started to recede on Tuesday from their record levels.
By Tuesday afternoon the NSW State Emergency Service had conducted more than 1500 rescues in the Lismore and Murwillumbah areas, collecting people who were stranded on roofs.Andrew Newton, the co-owner of Two Mates Brewing in South Lismore, toldhis business partner Grant Smith stayed at the business on Sunday night as water flooded into the building.
“Ninety-nine per cent of businesses in Lismore would be in the same boat. Unless you are capable of paying $80,000 to $90,000 in premiums you’re not covered,” he said. Mr Stewart, who grew up in Lismore and remembers boats sailing past his house in the 1974 flood, said the damage is devastating and the community has come together to support each other.
