Six teenagers, including two on bail, have been charged after allegedly breaking into a Newcastle home and then stabbing a former sports star and his elderly mother.
New South Wales Police were called to a home on Coane Street in Merewether, in the state's Hunter Region, about 3am on Tuesday after reports of a home invasion.
That shriek woke her son, champion surfer and local rugby union player Daniel Lowe, sleeping in a back shed of the property, who ran into the house to save his mum. The teens fled the scene and were chased down by the injured sports star, who was leaving a long trail of blood on the footpath and down the street.
