Researchers are studying the growing population of the six-toothed rainbow skink in Darwin, Australia. Believed to have been introduced about 25 years ago, the lizard is reportedly thriving in the city's environment. Scientists are encouraging public participation in 'citizen science' by uploading photos of the skink to online databases to track its spread and potential impact on local wildlife.

Researchers are studying the six-toothed rainbow skink's presence in Darwin and what it means for local wildlife.

" twice the size of the local rainbow skinks and very bold," says Chris Jolly, a Macquarie University reptile scientist."We watch them from our pool — eating insects, mating and all sorts of things that you just don't observe with the smaller, local, more retiring species." He said a decade ago they were still considered quite rare in the city, and a sighting would send reptile scientists into a frenzy.", if you just walk around your garden bed in the middle of town or the northern suburbs like Nightcliff or Rapid Creek, you can see as many as 10 to 20 individuals," Mr Farquhar said.

The researchers will then look at photos uploaded to the iNaturalist app, to verify skink sightings and track their spread.
