Liverpool mum Sarah Sandison looks at how parents can teach or improve the resilience in littles ones
Given the experience we endured throughout the pandemic, the current cost of living crisis, climate crisis, war in Ukraine…. I could go on. We’re living in a big scary world, where learned adaptability is an essential skill. So how can you teach, or improve the resilience in your littles ones?
Routine We all know kids thrive off routine. They love knowing where they are and where they’re going next. Keeping up with routines for e.g. childcare, co-parenting, after school activities, household chores, pocket money etc. builds a solid foundation for developing inner confidence. Change is inevitable and it's that confidence that can be drawn on, when change comes along.
Talk to them about what you’ll do differently next time. Not everything they try will work for them. So it's invaluable for them to understand that not all endings are disasters and that we're all learning every day. Hearing adults say things like, “I know I can do better next time” or “I’m not happy with the way that worked out” shows them it's ok to be human and that we’re not expecting them to be superheroes.
