A sixth police officer involved in the events leading to the violent murder of Tyre Nichols has been fired, the Memphis police department has said.
Officer Preston Hemphill, who had been hired by the Memphis Police Department in March 2018 and was terminated with five other officers after their involvement in a traffic stop that ended with the death of Tyre Nichols to the violent murder of Tyre NicholsOfficer Preston Hemphill was found to have “violated multiple department policies,” including stun gun deployment rules, an internal police investigation has found.
Lee Gerald, a lawyer representing Mr Hemphill told Reuters: “While we disagree with this termination, Preston Hemphill will continue to cooperate with all authorities in the investigation into the death of Mr Nichols.” Videos taken from bodycam footage released by Memphis police last week showed an officer firing a Taser at Mr Nichols, after he was hauled out of his car and beaten.
