The British TV company is known for its out-of-the-box thinking and its latest device is brilliant and unique.
It’s a small, rectangular camera device, powered by a smartphone-quality chip, which sits on top of certain TVs. It enables watch-together events, gaming and cutting-edge fitness capabilities. But not everyone can get it.
That’s because it is only compatible, for now at least, with one particular product from Sky, called Sky Glass. That’s the impressive system where you buy a flatscreen TV along with a Sky subscription, and you no longer need a satellite dish to have access to Sky’s unparalleled range of programming .
Sky Live snaps satisfyingly to the top of the Sky Glass metallic frame, and the camera is what makes it easy to watch shows and movies, or enjoy live sport, at the same time as a friend watching on their TV. But they need Sky Glass as well, of course. There’s a button on top so you can securely extinguish the camera and microphone—though there’s no physical camera shutter as some home security cameras boast for that extra peace of mind.
Watch Together, as the communal viewing experience is called, is very effective, though it doesn’t permit 4K video content—not yet, at least. That’s to ensure a smooth and effective user experience. The biggest part of the screen shows the main event, which could be live sport or on-demand content. The right edge is where you, your friends and your family can be seen and heard. Synchronized playback is automatically achieved.
