VIDEO: Brother of black man shot dead by a white Dallas police officer forgives and hugs her after she’s sentenced to a decade in prison.

Botham Jean's younger brother Brandt Jean hugs convicted murderer and former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger after delivering his impact statement to her after she was sentenced to 10 years in jail, Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, in Dallas. Guyger shot and killed Botham Jean, an unarmed 26-year-old neighbor in his own apartment last year. She told police she thought his apartment was her own and that he was an intruder.

Brandt Jean told Guyger that he thinks his brother would have wanted her to turn her life over to Christ, and that if she can ask God for forgiveness, she will get it. Jurors could have sentenced the former officer to up to life in prison or as little as two years, but prosecutors asked them to send her to prison for 28 years, which is how old Botham Jean would have been if he was still alive.

Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot, a former trial judge, called Brandt Jean’s embrace of Guyger was an “an amazing act of healing and forgiveness that is rare in today’s society ... especially for many of our leaders.” Neither Mike Mata, who heads the Dallas Police Association, one of Guyger’s lawyers, Toby Shook, immediately responded to requests for comment about the verdict. Guyger’s family was escorted out of the courtroom through a side stairway right after her sentence was handed down.
