One debutant and one surprise axing has headlined the Maroons Game One squad, while the race to replace Cameron Munster has been decided.
David Fifita’s heroic exploits in dismantling the Brisbane Broncos have not been enough to force his way into the State of Origin arena, in a shock decision by Queensland Maroons coach Billy Slater.David Fifita is assessed for a head injury during the Titans win over the Broncos.
An incumbent of last series victory, Fifita has run for more than 100m in all but one of his nine games this year – on that occasion, 99m against Manly. But while 2023 backrow partner Jeremiah Nanai has retained his place, having rediscovered the try-scoring brilliance that dazzled onlookers in his rookie season, Fifita was unable to fend off a challenge from St George-Illawarra Dragons gun Jaydn Su’A.Getty
Nanai has scored seven tries in his past five games, despite the inconsistent showings of his North Queensland Cowboys, while Su’A has earned a recall to the Origin stage for the first time since 2021.It is not the first time Slater has dropped a selection bombshell on the eve of a series, having overlooked Queensland veterans Dane Gagai, Kurt Capewell and Kaufusi last year.
