A new sleep tracker reveals up to 50 per cent of people with mild or moderate sleep apnoea could be misdiagnosed under current clinical testing, researchers say.

A new sleep tracker has revealed up to 50 per cent of people with mild or moderate sleep apnoea could be misdiagnosed under current clinical testing, researchers say.A researcher says there is a 20-50 per cent chance of misdiagnosis because clinical tests only run over one nightFlinders University researchers monitored 65,000 people nightly for eight months and found that the severity of a person's obstructive sleep apnoea varied considerably between nights.

He said the study found the risk of under-diagnosing or missing the condition altogether was about 20 per cent. The study also tested the validity of new technology, a sensor placed underneath a mattress to monitor breathing disturbances while the person was asleep. He said although the study went for eight months, just two weeks of data was enough to reduce the rate of incorrectly classifying a person to less than 10 per cent.Whyalla's Sleep Apnoea Support Group president Allenna Dyason welcomed the study and said the benefits were two-fold.
