Prime Minister Scott Morrison is operating at peak performance. He knows he has a narrow path to victory on May 21, and he will not be led astray. It all comes down to the Opposition Leader.
Labor’s small-target strategy has given the Coalition little on which to mount an all-out assault as it did with Bill Shorten in 2019, but conversely, it has left Anthony Albanese exposed on other fronts.
While Scott Morrison had a good start thanks to Anthony Albanese’s gaffe on unemployment and the cash rate, his message has largely been defensive.Over the past fortnight, he has visited every state and territory except the ACT. He rarely stays somewhere for more than one night and rarely commits to fewer than three events each day, even if just for the photos.
On the campaign trail, with the stresses of governing temporary cast aside, Morrison appears to be in his happy place. He is unlikely to make mistakes, and, if he loses, it won’t be because of any unforced campaign errors on his part – or even for anything Labor or Albanese has done.
