Currently the technology is mature enough to detect two conditions. InnerPlant is working on a third, and Aronov thinks they’ll be able to scale it to six or seven of the most common crop problems.
If that happens, farmers can essentially have an early-warning system, initiated by the plants themselves, for serious conditions that can result in crop loss or even complete failure.
Aronov says they’re able to provide that to farmers at precisely the existing cost they currently pay for seed, thanks to so many common GMO traits coming off-patent soon. The product is still in testing, however. First commercial launch is currently scheduled for the 2024 growing season in the U.S.Aronov has a big vision, however.
“What we want to do is not just create smart seeds ... it’s to create an ecosystem that delivers value to the farmers, because it’s not going to be one company or one technology that changes that,” Aronov says. “It’s going to be everyone coming on board, better seeds, better technology, better inputs provided, better ways to apply, better data platforms. Together we can create something new.”
