Australia's stand-in captain Steve Smith has been applauded - and criticised - by cricket fans who noticed he was taking advantage of a loophole in the rules.

Australia are on the brink of a victory against Indian in Indore entering Friday just 76 runs shy of claiming the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

However, during the review the third umpire is required to check whether the ball has nicked the bat on the way through meaning the Australians ultimately get a free review for caught behind. “Fair play to Steve Smith because he’s playing the system but it’s very evident Carey has been asked to whip the bails every time the ball beats the bat. Smith straight away asks the square leg umpire and they invariably get a free review,” Indian sports journalist Swaroop Swaminathan tweeted.

“Steve Smith appealing for a caught behind and asking to review a certain not out stumping to the striker’s end umpire by appealing unnecessarily is called CHEATING. Bonafide and a proven one,” an annoyed fan tweeted.
