Trelon Smith’s continued recovery helps boost improving UTSA rushing attack
UTSA running back Brenden Brady moves the ball down the field during the first quarter of Saturday’s Conference USA game against Western Kentucky at the Alamodome.Attempting a stiff arm during an outside zone carry against Army, UTSA running back Trelon Smith felt a defender crash down across his ankle.
He hoped to be back on the field for UTSA the following week against Texas, and though he tested his strength during pregame warmups, the team decided he was not yet ready to return. “I wanted to be out there, man. I was anxious to be back, and I was excited to be back,” Smith said. “Being out there on the field, it’s just a different vibe. Bringing that energy to the team. And they were excited I was there.”
“He’s just not well, still,” UTSA coach Jeff Traylor said. “He’s still making plays, but he’s not as sharp as I want him to be. … He’s a playmaker. If we can get him to the bye week, get him some time off, I think you’ll see an unbelievable stretch out of him in the end.” Harris said Brady, a fifth-year senior, has displayed the same intelligence and maturity through the year, leading UTSA with 386 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
