Just five days out from the Sydney to Hobart, the Bureau of Meteorology's usual pre-race forecast has been clouded by smoke haze | sarah_keoghan
The Bureau of Meteorology is struggling to piece together its usual Sydney to Hobart forecast, with bushfire smoke adding a new level of complexity to race preparations.
"On Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, we're looking at some onshore flow, and a couple of showers and thunderstorms," she said. "We're getting air from the Tasman across and so it's not drawing the smoky air from the fire grounds and across the basin, so that usually means we start to sort of see a little bit of improvement in the air quality and a little bit less smoke around.
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia commodore Paul Billingham said while he was "optimistic" about conditions, he would keep an eye on bushfire movements. “We’re really happy for some upwind sailing," he said. "We are hoping the southerly gets up the coast for 1300 hours on Boxing Day … and 25 knots would be perfect for at least 24 hours.”
