Along with Sydney, total fire bans are in place with "severe" fire danger forecast in the Hunter, Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Southern Ranges, Central Ranges, Monaro Alpine and ACT.Sunrise over Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday morning.Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Abrar Shabren said the smoke will remain over Sydney for most of the day, although a southerly change in the afternoon is likely to push it west.

A temperature inversion over the city which is trapping the smoke is not expected to break before Wednesday morning, with similar smoky conditions predicted again then.Temperatures in the Hunter and western regions are heading into the low-mid 40s, Mr Shabren said. Later in the afternoon, the southerly change will result in a rapid "significant drop" of 5-8 degrees along the coast, but it will still feel hot.

Ms Berejiklian said Tuesday would be "a very dangerous day for NSW" during a briefing with the Rural Fire Service on Monday afternoon. "This again is giving us a taste for what we are likely to experience the next few months ... that combination, as we know, has been lethal in the last few months so we are anticipating a big effort on the ground tomorrow."
