Billie Piper has written and directed her first film - an anti romcom - here's what Red's Editor Sarah Tomczak thought of it.
, left me feeling uncomfortable. Not because she’d done a bad job – actually it was rather the opposite. The anti-romcom, as it’s already been dubbed since its debut at the, has a strange way of reflecting your inner voice back at you, through its protagonist Mandy , a single mother, teetering on the edge, yet also in search of a relationship. She’s struggling. With her job, her family, her son,. She’s struggling with the feminist version of herself she wants to be.
Her relationship with Pete , her colleague-turned lover is also uncomfortable – mainly because he’s such a dick to her, you just want her to have some self-respect and walk away. And yet they are moments when he seems to adore her, and their strange, crude banter suggests a rare connection. And, well, because so many of us have been there, haven’t we? Finding ourselves making excuses for a man’s behaviour, just to keep the relationship going.
Rare Beasts is raw and a bit mad and also darkly funny in places: a bizarre dinner with Pete’s devoutly religious family friends; a ridiculous choreographed ‘first-dance routine’ performed by a newlywedand her groom, and even an agonising striptease scene, where Mandy tells Pete what’s wrong with each piece of her body as she reveals it to him. But mainly I found it confronting, because it felt like a statement on modern life, and love.
