The Snow White live-action remake starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot has been delayed by Disney for almost an entire year amid the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Disney's Snow White remake has been hit with a huge delay. The upcoming live-action movie, which is being helmed by The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb, is a reimagining of Disney's very first animated feature, 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which itself is adapted from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name.
Disney has announced that they are delaying the release of the live-action Snow White by nearly a year. It is being moved from its original release date of March 22, 2024 to March 21, 2025. This news comes amid the ongoing Screen Actors Guild strike. As actors continue to fight for fair pay, they are refraining from performing in or promoting struck productions like Snow White, which affects the viability of its release in addition to any potential reshoots.
Disney Needs Snow White To Be a Hit This extreme delay of the Snow White release makes sense. While it's possible that the SAG-AFTRA strike will end in the coming weeks if talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers go well, any possible effect it could have on the live-action remake's premiere could be dangerous for the company.
2023, which also coincides with Disney's centennial celebration, has seen Disney stumble and fall quite a few times at the box office. Perhaps their splashiest failure was the release of the belated sequel Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which made $383.9 million off its estimated $300 million budget , losing the company roughly $100 million.
Their biggest post-strike live-action movie, the theme park attraction adaptation Haunted Mansion, was likewise a financial disappointment. This is partially because the movie was released just one week after the blockbuster pairing of Barbie and Oppenheimer, but it was also the first weekend where movies were hit with the full force of the strike, which began on July 14.
