The Australian Energy Market Operator ordered two gas-fired power plants in Victoria to shut down in a further worsening of the energy crisis slamming the eastern states.
The Australian Energy Market Operator has ordered two gas-fired power plants owned by Snowy Hydro in Victoria to shut down in a bid to keep the gas supply operating safely and securely at the correct pressure for customers.
The AEMO had to intervene to order the two gas-fired power stations to curtail operations which it said was “in line with previous communications issued for the Iona storage depletion threat to system security event”.The AEMO said the direction would remain in effect until the threat to system security ended or the market participant demonstrated it could source gas to meet power demand, potentially until October 1.
“The Queensland producers are committed to increasing supply to southern states. We will start to see that flow through over the coming days, and then that will, combined with other steps taken to manage the Iona storage levels, hopefully see a stabilisation of storage levels of that facility,” he said.
“It’s not about price, it’s not about stopping gas going offshore, what it is about is creating a transparent process to make sure we balance supply and demand in the southern states and get the right flows out of Queensland.” The minister said the fact that 70 per cent of Australian gas was exported was “the root cause of this problem”, calling for the market to change to “work in favour of consumers”.
