Millennial investors face a problem: do they liquidate their shares to buy a property, now that prices are softening?

, but faced with falling property prices and rising interest rates, many are wondering whether now is the time to liquidate their shares to relieve mortgage pain, say financial advisers.

The former chief marketing officer at major investment platform SelfWealth said he began investing in 2018 to help him in his role, and gradually invested $160,000 over five years. Depending on when they bought, those with a mortgage may have already shot past the former 2.5 per cent serviceability buffer banks used to stress test potential borrowers before October 2021. Many others will be nearing the 3 per cent buffer banks currently test against.

Morgan Stanley’s retail flow tracker also recorded a 13.7 per cent reduction in the percentage of total volumes traded by retail investors in the 12 months to December 2022.
