Australian multicultural public broadcaster SBS will be thinking $20 million invested in securing the rights to the FIFA World Cup 2022 was money well spent after the Socceroos beat Peru to qualify for the finals in Qatar in November.
“The qualification of the Australian team helps set up what we have no doubt will be an action packed FIFA World Cup 2022 that will engage Australians of all backgrounds. We have already seen strong interest and SBS looks forward to broadcasting all 64 games of the tournament, live, exclusive and free to all Australians on TV and SBS On Demand in November and December this year.
Mr Macerola, whose job involves buying media space for clients to advertise in, predicts the World Cup will deliver strong ratings for SBS. Mr Macerola described the Qatar timezone as “quite favourable” for the Australian audience, with the Socceroos taking on France likely to pull in a large live audience thanks to not having to get up in the middle of the night to participate.
Mr Macerola believes Paramount is gambling on growth in soccer audiences quite broadly as the company, which owns Network 10 and Paramount+ invests in A-League, W-League and other soccer events in a bid to be the home of soccer.
