The Socceroos' nervous journey towards next year's men's World Cup will continue on home soil, with Football Australia confirming Melbourne will host a crunch qualifier against Vietnam next month.
A capacity crowd is expected to fill AAMI Park next month when the Socceroos host Vietnam in one of the final qualification matches ahead of the 2022 men's World Cup in Qatar.The Socceroos currently sit third in Group B, one point behind Japan, with four matches to go
It will be the first time in more than four years that the Socceroos have played a match in Melbourne, with Thursday, January 27 chosen for the crucial qualifier. "Many of our current and recent squad members have strong ties to Victoria, so I expect that they will be thrilled with today's match announcement," Socceroos head coach Graham Arnold said.
Despite the positivity around the event, Australia's 2022 World Cup campaign is on a knife-edge. The Socceroos currently sit third in group B on 11 points behind Japan and Saudi Arabia with just four matches remaining.
