Follow along for all the live action for the Socceroos’ World Cup qualifier against Lebanon in Canberra. A win will see the Aussie’s go through to the third round.
It’s a warm-ish night - perfect for football - and a sold-out crowd is currently filing into GIO Stadium, although the locals apparently like to leave it quite late here for some reason. Go figure. This is a big opportunity for the Socceroos to confirm their spot in the next round of World Cup qualifying, which they would do with two games left to spare with a win tonight.
On Sunday night, more than 20,032 tickets have already been sold, surpassing the previous record set in 2009 when Australia played Kuwait in an AFC Asian Cup qualifier. Lebanon were forced to move their last World Cup qualifier to a neutral location due to the ongoing instability in the region caused by the Israel-Hamas conflict, and have been directed to do so again by the Asian Football Confederation, electing to play at GIO Stadium after discussions with the ACT government and Football Australia, who are assisting the Lebanese Football Association with the delivery of the fixture.
You’d think it’s more than within the realm of possibility, too, with Australia ranked 23rd in the world and Lebanon 115th.The Socceroos emerged victorious in their third qualifier against Lebanon last Thursday night in Sydney, with goals from Keanu Baccus and Kye Rowles.Baccus had a long-range strike, while Rowles’ goal, his first an international level, was from a set-piece.
