Social media companies would be required to take preventative action against the worst foreseeable harms of their platforms under new laws the federal government has proposed.

Online platforms would be legally responsible for keeping Australians safe online under new Digital Duty of Care laws.

The Digital Duty of Care was recommended in the yet-to-be released independent review of the Online Safety Act, handed to government last month. "What's required is a shift away from reacting to harms by relying on content regulation alone, and moving towards systems-based prevention, accompanied by a broadening of our perspective of what online harms are," she said. While the Coalition is all in favour of banning kids from social media, it's less clear how it will respond to the crackdown on mis and disinformation.

"Where platforms seriously and systemically breach their duty of care we will ensure the regulator can draw on strong penalty arrangements."The minister said the new duty would mean platforms have to continually assess and take preventative action to mitigate potential risks.
