The right age for children to start using social media is a topic of hot debate.

Paying children to stay off social media can be attractive to some parents but may not be the best approach.Pendergast warns that without age-appropriate access to social media under parental supervision, children inadvertently gaining access would not know what to do and would not feel like they could discuss it with a parent, or seek help if they were exposed to something questionable or risky.

Involving children in extracurricular activities such as sport, art and music can serve to build their self-esteem and naturally curb their screen time.
