Madison used a five-run fifth inning and a solid outing from pitcher Sophia Ytuarte to defeat Clark 7-2 and stay in first place in the District 28-6A softball standings.

Madison pitcher Sophia Ytuarte celebrates after striking out the last batter to finish off a complete game in Tuesday's 7-2 win over Clark.Madison senior pitcher Sophia Ytuarte quieted Clark’s offense, and a five-run fifth inning stood up as the Mavericks defeated the Cougars 7-2 in a key District 28-6A softball matchup Tuesday evening at Northside ISD Softball Fields.“She’s grown into a wonderful, mature pitcher and athlete,” Madison coach Laurie Friesenhahn said of Ytuarte.

Gonzales reached on an error, and Jewliana Cartagena singled on a high chopper over the shortstop to load the bases. Ytuarte hit a double up the middle, bringing Rodriguez and Gonzales home to give Madison a 3-1 lead. Sarah Zamora got an RBI of her own with a grounder to third, and an error allowed Cartagena to score and Ytuarte to reach third. Jacqueline Espinosa capped the rally with a two-run double to deep left field, bringing in Ytuarte and Zamora for a 6-1 lead.

“I’ve got to give it to my girls; they’re patient,” Friesenhahn said. “They keep their composure in the box. They saw the ball a little better and took care of it.”After drawing a walk, Zamora stole her way to third. She then came home on a wild pitch by Clark's Ava Hetrick.
