Telstra customers are complaining about calls dropping midway and callers receiving messages saying a number is not connected when it is.

"My mum has one in her house and it doesn't do much; it's constantly dropping out because it can't get a strong connection," she said.Telstra said devices used to boost mobile signals were also to blame for some ongoing transmission issues.

But when used illegally, Telstra area general manager Boyd Brown said they could cause significant issues and could even knock out coverage to an entire area. A spokesperson for the Australian Communications and Media Authority said they had not received any complaints of interference from illegal repeaters in the Wheatbelt in the last 12 months.

In 2018-19 they received just 39 complaints where mobile phone repeaters were causing problems, compared to 123 in 2013-14.Member for Moore Shane Love said there needed to be a thorough investigation into what was causing the problems.
