Solar power has outpaced coal power as the number one fuel source in the power grid in August for the first time ever, as the energy transition accelerates.

While solar generation typically emerges as the dominant source of electricity needs in spring, Energy Edge managing director Josh Stabler said the pattern has never been observed this early in the year.

At its peak, solar was producing 11,487 megawatts of power, while coal was 9784MW, according to Energy Edge, The peak solar dispatch will still occur during summer but the hotter weather will bring higher demand so the current period is the optimal period in terms of maximum market share for solar. The record, however, may not last long as ever more Australians install rooftop solar in a bid to shelter from higher electricity prices.“The Australian Energy Market Operator expects very bullish growth in solar all the way through this decade.
