Solomon: Though Justin Verlander left Astros, the smart money's on Jim Crane
With his team's championship count up to two, Astros owner Jim Crane clearly likes having the Commissioner’s Trophy around. With the Astros in the heat of the hot stove league, owner Jim Crane has barely had time to relish his team’s victory in the World Series. The controversy attached to the Astros’ 2017 title weighed heavily on him. The return to the top of the game — considering how much the Astros have won, they really never left the neighborhood — was particularly satisfying.
He won the Cy Young Award in 2019 and 2022 and finished second in 2018. Verlander posted three of the top four WHIPs in Astros history and had two of the top four strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratios. And his 1.75 ERA in 175 innings this past season is second among qualifying starters only to Nolan Ryan’s 1.69 in 149 innings during strike-shortened 1981.
“It got to a number that we couldn’t match,” Crane said. “Would have been nice to have him. We had a good relationship. We just couldn’t get to that number.”
