Liberal MP Rowan Ramsey says Indigenous families in Ceduna capable of managing life “perfectly well” were largely “unaffected” by the cashless debit card.

“For the ones that have difficulty managing income, I think that’s the case, there are Indigenous families in … Ceduna that manage their life perfectly well,” Mr Ramsey told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“They were largely unaffected by the card because if they were on welfare, of course, you wouldn’t spend more than … 20 per cent of your income on alcohol and gambling.”

Stolen Generations apology was never a ‘turning point’ in Indigenous welfare: Peta CredlinStolen Generations apology was never a ‘turning point’ in Indigenous welfare: Peta CredlinWhile the Stolen Generations National Apology was a significant and symbolic occasion, it was never a turning point in the actual well-being of Indigenous people, according to Sky News host Peta Credlin. She said Indigenous people, on average, still leave school earlier, are much less likely to have a job, and die younger than other Australians. “It seems the more we talk about how hard-done-by Aboriginal people have been and how unfair our society is and how many special measures there needs to be, for some of us but not for all of us, the more things remain the same,” Ms Credlin said. “Or even get worse; as we're seeing in Alice Springs, Ceduna and elsewhere where grog bans have been lifted and the cashless debit card has been abolished.”
