🛒 Supermarkets blame the latest shortages on bad weather in Spain and Morocco, but British farmers say the story is more complicated
According to the supermarkets, the disruption to the supply of fresh vegetables has largely been caused by cold weather in Spain and Morocco, where much of Britain’s vegetables are imported from at this time of year.
While Britain has always been dependent on fresh produce from Spain and Northern Africa during the winter months, growers say the dependence is far greater this year. Lee Stiles, Secretary of the Lea Valley Growers Association, said many of their growers have stopped planting vine tomatoes “due to the labour involved and the diminishing returns”.
In addition to tomato and salad shortages, Mr Ward said the UK is also experiencing a shortage of brassicas, including cabbages and cauliflowers, as these crops were planted during last summer’s drought, impacting yields.According to the British Retail Consortium, supermarkets “are adept at managing supply chain issues and are working with farmers to ensure that customers are able to access a wide range of fresh produce.
