And he said, “Well, I’ll introduce you to Alan and Mike, but first you should talk to, who was Alan’s assistant on the plays. And Sheldon is the one who has an overview of all this stuff, and he’ll give you the frame of the puzzle, and then you can put the pieces into the frame.
I thought I was going to be writing mostly about Second City, and then Sheldon said, “If you write about Second City, you have to write about the Compass because Compass really was the launching pad for Second City. In fact, when they were building Second City, they originally wanted to call it the Compass again. And David Shepherd said, “I own that name. You can’t use it.” He could have had a piece of Second City if he had let them call it the Compass.
You have always been clear about wishing you had been able to include an interview with Elaine May in the original book. But in this edition, you reveal Elaine May actively worked against your putting the original book together. Well, people kept getting in touch with me saying, “I’m here because I read the book.” Or even people in the book. Somebody [I interviewed] in the book, maybe it was Paul Sand, said to me once, “Gee, I didn’t realize I was part of something important until you interviewed me. I just thought this was something I was doing, another step along the way in the journey. But jeez, I’m part of the thing. I’m part of a movement that is important enough to have a book written about it.
