, Danny has nightmares that wake him, screaming and gasping for breath, terrified that the monsters are going to get him. Because for Danny, the monsters are real.

Each time Steve ventures out for supplies, he is armed with a rifle and wearing a motorcycle helmet, returning smeared with rabbit’s blood to convince his wide-eyed son of the jeopardy that lies in wait should he step outside. This is Gribben’s first lead role, and he is remarkable in it. With shorn fair hair and big, piercing blue eyes giving him a permanently haunted look, Danny is an unsettling, otherworldly presence. Both childlike and an old soul, he is completely out of step with those who now surround him – his aunt , riddled with guilt that she didn’t step in sooner, and her family.

Danny’s new world is one of generic British suburbia sometime in the past 20 years: it is everywhere and nowhere. Most importantly, there is the same delicate balance of pathos and deadpan humour. Any moments of absurdity are underscored by heart and soul and deep care for these characters even in their worst moments.
