Advertising for the PS5 has been updated to remove any mention of it running games at 8K, as the logo disappears from the box.
When did that disappear? Gamers, and games companies, love arguing over numbers. In days past it was how many bits your console had, then the resolution of games, and more recently it’s been frame rate. That’s meant that last generation’s obsession with 4K resolution has been largely forgotten in recent years and most people probably don’t even realise that, since launch in 2020, Sony has been pretending the PlayStation 5 can run 8K games – even though it can’t.
Although it’s vastly less important than some companies have tried to pretend, the question of resolution has also been sidelined by the advent of DLSS and other similar technologies, which allows resolution to be upscaled with very little impact on performance.
