Moto GP: There was big drama in Aragon with reigning World Champion Francesco Bagnaia taken out, while Marc Marquez claimed another win, and Jorge Martin extended his lead.
Francesco Bagnaia . And by following the lead of MotoGP’s reigning double world champion, the Spaniard has the Italian in an unusual predicament – a position of vulnerability.
The six Italian riders in the field – Bagnaia and Bastianini, most tellingly – could probably lap Misano blindfolded, the track a 15-minute cruise from Tavullia, Valentino Rossi’s home town and home to the VR46 Academy that propelled the factory Ducati teammates into the world championship as teenagers.
Bagnaia was both sore and sorry when he faced the media on Thursday, paying the physical price for the incident with Alex Marquez that left him feeling “a lot of pain on the shoulder, over the collarbone, neck,” but willing to walk back his stinging criticism of the Spanish rider“I want to say sorry to Alex for the strong words I said in the interviews after the race,” Bagnaia said, adding: “I was very angry for what happened looking at the telemetry was even worse from my point of view.
“My physical condition is honestly not the best, I don’t feel like I can move my body as I want,” he said. The Spanish star has been ravaged by injury since his 2019 title, but took a sixth career win at the remote desert circuit near Alcaniz to draw to within 70 points of series leader Martin with eight rounds to go.
At Aragon last weekend, the Australian confirmed he was being frozen out of KTM’s development plans for its RC16 machine over the balance of the season, a decision he called “just business”. Miller was on pole at Misano in 2022, but his one-lap pace hasn’t translated to race results. Marc Marquez’s first Grand Prix win for 1043 days at Aragon last Sunday closed the chapter on a miserable final four seasons at Repsol Honda, where he won just three times and missed nearly half the races with injury between 2020-23 before inking a one-year deal with Gresini Ducati for this season.
