South Africa's noticeable drop in new COVID-19 cases in recent days could signal the country's dramatic omicron-driven surge has passed its peak, according to medical experts.

Genetic sequencing identified the new, highly mutated Omicron variant and it was announced to the world on November 25.An estimated 90 per cent of COVID-19 cases in Gauteng province since the middle of November have been Omicron, according to tests.

But then cases in Gauteng started falling. After reaching 16,000 new infections on December 12, the province's numbers steadily dropped to just over 3,300 cases on Tuesday. In another sign South Africa's surge may be receding, a study of local health care professionals who tested positive for COVID-19 showed a rapid increase and then a quick decline in cases.
