A South Australian ecologist says a fish kill she discovered on the weekend stretches over 20km of the state’s coastline. Faith Coleman, who has been working along the Coorong for the past six years, saw thousands of fish carcasses at the South Lagoon over the weekend. She said it was the second fish kill in that area in 2024 following a similar fish kill in March. Such an event at South Lagoon hadn’t happened at this time of year since the end-of-the-millennium drought, she said.

Coleman said it was possible a storm in the area stirred up sediment beneath the water, causing oxygen levels to deplete. She said it may also be because of high salinity as a result of less water flowing into the Coorong from up stream. “This is progressing every year, every few decades, further and further north. There’s areas of the North Lagoon that are quite sick, and we occasionally get fish kills in Summer,” Coleman said.
