South coast doctor backed as Labor candidate for Bega byelection | rabe9
The state of the South Coast healthcare system is set to become a key focus of the looming Bega byelection, with NSW Labor leader Chris Minns backing a Moruya obstetrician to wrestle the regional seat off the Coalition.
Dignams Creek local Dr Fiona Kotvojs, who has twice run unsuccessfully for the federal seat of Eden-Monaro, has been endorsed by the Liberal Party to replace Mr Constance as he attempts a move to Canberra in the federal seat of Gilmore. The 64-year-old said he had been driven to run for state politics after watching local frontline staff work under increasing pressure over the past decade.
The Liberals’ margin of the electorate was trimmed by 1.3 per cent at the 2019 state election. Mr Constance, who announced his resignation in October, has held the seat since 2003.
