South-east Queensland could soon be home to automated choppers programmed to take patrons to their destinations by air as part of a push to bring flying taxis to the area. 9News

The new aerial taxis will be used to ferry athletes, locals and spectators ahead of the Olympic games.

"We're partnering with Casa, with other agencies but ultimately the timeline will be driven by regulators," Catherine MacGowan from Wisk Aero said.Councils are teaming up with aircraft developers to introduce the new technology, which could be ready within the next 10 years.The taxis will be fully electric, and cab ranks called vertiports will be designed as pick-up points for passengers.

The trial model is able to carry two people, but there are plans to create helicopters that will carry four people up to 760-1200 metres in ten years' time."There's always someone operating on the ground to make sure they're monitoring the aircraft," MacGowan said.
