Southern Dallas Sprouts grocery ‘too suburban’ for City Plan Commission | Editorial
Dallas Morning News EditorialIf there is one thing neighborhoods south of the Trinity River have desperately needed for too many years to count, it’s grocery stores.
Not by a long shot. Listening to the Aug. 18 meeting where the commission voted to deny Sprouts a zoning request is like being transported to a universe where fresh produce and healthy foods are easy for all Oak Cliff residents to come by. It wasn’t enough for the Plan Commission. The “urban form” wasn’t good enough. To certain commissioners, the site plan was too “suburban,” a term that got thrown around like a four-letter word.The standards certain commissioners were applying to this site would be better suited to a boutique bazaar in the actual Hamptons rather than the site of the Crown Buffet along Hampton Avenue. This is, after all, still an area where a lot of working people use their cars to get their groceries.
The Plan Commission’s denial of the Sprouts application risks access to another source of fresh groceries so that a gentrifying area can be less suburban, at least in the eyes of a few commissioners.
