Soutgate has turned England into tournament specialists, it wasn't always this straightforward
We are all ready for the retorts: it’s only Wales just like it was only Iran. Robert Page and his team have experienced a dismal tournament; no arguments there. Every time the Red Wall sung Yma o Hyd, the tone became a little more sombre and the volume a little less loud. They came to Qatar dreaming of the same unbridled progress of 2016 and left winless and hopeless. The Wales that made it here is not the same as the one who endured it.
This will not continue unabated. England may lose to Senegal or France or whoever else comes along. No country has the right to breeze through anything. It takes a high-class group of footballers who come together and place the power of the group over their individual interests. And it takes a manager who preaches the virtues of those principles and thus inspires them to be better. “Southgate, you’re the one,” they sang on and off, as England coasted home.
Having been named as the official Man of the Match, Rashford was obliged to appear in the post-match press conference and was asked about his celebration.“Unfortunately I lost one of my friends a couple of days ago,” Rashford said. “He had a long battle with cancer, so I’m pleased that I was able to score for him. He was a great person and I’m just pleased he could come into my life.”
