At the time of the grounding, Southwest had 34 737 MAX planes scheduled to fly.
: Southwest airline’s pilots union is suing Boeing over the grounding of its 737 MAX aircraft, alleging that the company misled pilots about the safety of the 737 MAX and that its grounding resulted in more than $100 million in lost wages.
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, which represents 10,000 Southwest pilots, claim in the lawsuit that Boeing failed to disclose design flaws that made the 737 MAX unsafe to fly. If the pilot’s union would have known about the flaws, the lawsuit says, it never would have agreed to have its members operating the aircraft.
After two deadly crashes that resulted in the loss of 346 lives over the last year, Boeing grounded the 737 MAX as it works on a fix for a component of the plane’s automated flight controls called the maneuvering characteristics augmentation system, or MCAS. The grounding, which is still ongoing, caused Southwest to cancel 30,000 flights that resulted in lost economic opportunities for pilots.“Boeing has the greatest respect for the men and women who fly for Southwest Airlines. We are aware that their pilot union, SWAPA, has filed a lawsuit against Boeing related to the 737 MAX suspension of operations. We believe this lawsuit is meritless and will vigorously defend against it,” the company said in a statement.
