There were once plans for a nation-leading reconciliation space at Hobart's Macquarie Point. But over time, the space has shrunk — and will now shrink again because of cricket pitches and the Goods Shed.
An Aboriginal reconciliation and truth-telling park was once proposed as the centrepiece of development at Macquarie Point , but when a stadium emerged, its location and scale changed.
Debate over how to use Macquarie Point on the edge of the Hobart waterfront has raged for years, with little progress made.was seen as the ideal location to begin to address this, sitting alongside the shores in Hobart where Aboriginal people in Tasmania may have first observed colonisation. "A 13,000-square-metre public open space important for large-scale events and festivals, providing a meaningful and culturally respectful space to create a sense of connectedness through play, public art, green and cultural spaces," the plan reads.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff and then-AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan sign a deal for a Tasmanian AFL team, including the Macquarie Point stadium. The numbers are eye-wateringly large, with some economists worried the financial burden will be too great.Macquarie Point is largely reclaimed land, but its original shoreline would be used in the design of the "zone".
The Tasmanian Greens have used the altered plans to question the government's commitment to reconciliation."They made them a promise. They promised an amazing site here that had truth and respect and healing at its heart," Greens MLC Cassy O'Connor said. The Aboriginal zone will be on the western approach to the stadium, but there are also ideas to incorporate Aboriginal heritage into the broader design. She said there was still a lot of consultation that needed to occur with the Aboriginal community, but she was confident it could result in something meaningful."Whether its artwork around the stadium, incorporated into the entrance, the shape, the materials, the seating arrangements, there is an Aboriginal lens that we could look through.
