Qantas has been compelled to postpone several flights departing from Sydney due to debris from Elon Musk's SpaceX rockets. The airline received warnings from the U.S. government about the re-entry of SpaceX rockets into Earth's atmosphere, prompting delays of up to six hours. SpaceX's last-minute adjustments to the re-entry coordinates and timing have caused disruptions for Qantas flights headed to Johannesburg. The airline is urging SpaceX to refine their re-entry procedures to minimize future flight delays.
Qantas has been forced to delay several flights from Sydney in recent weeks due to debris from Elon Musk 's SpaceX rockets. Several flights from Sydney to Johannesburg over the past few weeks have faced serious delays after the major Australian airline received advice from the U.S. government regarding the re-entry of SpaceX rockets into Earth’s atmosphere. The airline said it was advised the rockets would be re-entering over a part of the southern Indian Ocean.
Delays of up to six hours were reported after the tech company changed the coordinates for the location and timing of re-entry at the last minute. Head of Qantas's operations centre, Ben Holland said the airline wants SpaceX to narrow their re-entry areas. 'While we try to make any changes to our schedule in advance, the timing of recent launches have moved around at late notice which has meant we've had to delay some flights just prior to departure,' Mr Holland said. 'Customers generally understand this is outside of airlines' control and that we can't fly in the area when the rocket re-entry is taking place. 'We're in contact with SpaceX to see if they can refine the areas and time windows for the rocket re-entries to minimise future disruption.' The tech company changed the coordinates for the location and timing of re-entry at the last minute. In September, Elon Musk’s SpaceX made history when the crew successfully completed its first-ever spacewalk. The Polaris Dawn crew, named after the three-star constellation, ventured 738km above the Earth’s surface before tech billionaire Jared Isaacman stepped out of the Dragon space capsule. 'Back at home we all have a lot of work to do, but from here Earth sure looks like a perfect world,' Isaacman said, as he looked down on Earth from space. Vice President of Dragon at SpaceX Stu Keech said the walk was a step towards the company's ultimate goal of facilitating human life to become multi-planetary
